Spanish
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart”. Nelson Mandela |
Pupils at HATO start learning Spanish from Year 1. Our pupils have a lesson each week in which they learn how to read, write, understand and speak Spanish as well as learning about Spanish speaking countries around the world.
Pupils in KS3 have 2 Spanish lessons of 50 minutes per week and pupils in KS4 have 3 Spanish lessons of 50 minutes per week. The way we teach languages is by its nature very accessible. Lessons are taught in English and in target language to ensure full language immersion. Our pupils also take part in a number of competitions, events, school trips and clubs throughout the year to showcase and celebrate their achievements in Spanish. Spanish is also taught at Primary level once a week to all year groups.
Mission statement
Through studying languages, we promote pupils’ curiosity and understanding of different countries’ people, culture, history, literature and arts. We challenge pupils to consider their own identity and place in the world and to appreciate and empathise with different ways of seeing the world. We celebrate and harness the experience and cultural identity that many of our pupils bring to the language classroom at the Academy in Tottenham.
